Hourglass
Music by: Matthew Nassida
Book and Lyrics by: Caroline Game
Iris, the matriarch of the family, has recently passed away, leaving a mess in her house for her daughter, Dawn, and her granddaughter, Autumn to clean (with the help of Autumn’s 8 year-old daughter, Lily). As Dawn and Autumn begin going through Iris’ belongings - and on a few forbidden trips down memory lane - their differing opinions on the late Iris come to the surface. To Autumn, her grandmother was present, doting, supportive, and filled to the brim with the most gentle compassion. To Dawn, her mother was cruel and controlling with blinding ambition that led them both down a very dark, cold road. As they pack their late family member’s house, much more is unpacked, chiefly Dawn’s pageant days and the very high price of winning; a price she continues to pay.
A story about memory, body image, and the courage to perceive oneself, Hourglass centers mothers and daughters, and the beautiful, complicated ways in which they reflect each other.
